Trip to the underground.

CHINESE VERSION

We arrived in Beijing on Tuesday the 28th May and no time for breaks - first gig was programmed in The White Rabbit the same night.

Although not a massive turnout ,the vibe was good and everyone who was there loved it . Dancefloor not packed but very active....

Afterwards we shot off to Anna's bar for the first of many nights of drinking til dawn....

Our second gig was Friday night at the 2 kolegas and unfortunately the same night as a massive rock festival and another chinese music event, so ravers were once again thin on the ground but good fun was had by all . At this point i was definitely starting to wonder if anyone was going to turn up for the rest of the tour !

The pool tables in China are enormous and it was here that i played possibly the worst games of my life !

Next day we take the plane to Cheng Du and the Zebra music festival....

2 Kolegas Album.....

The Zebra music festival in Cheng Du was organised in aid of last year's earthquake victims - we were lucky enough to be invited to play on the xiong mao stage (xiong mao = panda)

This possee also run an extremely having it nightclub in Cheng Du where we attended an active after party..... I was very impressed to find out that i could walk into a small club on the other side of the planet and all my drinks were free, i just had to sign my name - now thats class!

If i was worried about no crowd then my worries were over as i think about 50,000 people attended this event - the main stage was mental with mad LED lighting effects.

Unfortunately we had technical problems and i was obliged to play on headphones without working monitors which was a shame but i think i got away with it........

We played Saturday night and headed back for more dancefloor action with High Tone on the Sunday....

As nightclubs go the Truecolour in Shenzhen was the biggest culture shock i got - as we arrived with the gear to be greeted by a sound track of commercial chinese pop and pedestals of dancing girls in skimpy clothes and high heels "I think we're on the wrong floor" Mickey says .....

But no - and the pressure's on for me but as i hit them with my latest live booty of "shake what ya mama gave ya!" I think it's safe to say that the place did go wild.......

Punters were playing dice and ordering copious bottles of spirits and the dancefloors going mental!!!!!

With the hotel just 1 floor up by elevator i thought this was sweet - but no as afterwards we go out on the street to drink beer and rice liquor and eat chinese kebabs.

In the morning i go to check the market and i've never seen such odd stuff for sale - try dried sea horses for a tasty snack !

TRUECOLOUR ALBUM

The PingPong in Guangzhou (Canton) is a french run venue with a nice outdoor space and bigger dancefloor area to come.

We spent most of this night rockin to the tribal grooves of Meltdown on the ones n twos .

I sustained serious cocktail burns from an over enthusiastic B52.

The owner of this bar aparently wanted to be the first person to recieve Spiral Tribe (or Audiotrix) in Guangzhou, but soon came to realise the problem with having Spiral Tribe round is that it's very hard to get them to leave..........

But fair play to all the crew - they were bang up for it!!!!

PINGPONG ALBUM

After a 26hr train journey and 7hrs of bus we arrive at Dali to supposedly chill for a few days but after meeting up with Bad Monkey crew (strange how you meet Spiral Ravers in the remotest corners of the globe!) chilling out takes a bit of a back seat.....

An impromptu date is quickly set for Thursday night - its live only as there are no decks in Dali - so i settle in for a quick 5hr set before taking the 9.30 bus to Kunming.

Theres a few shots of the town in this album as this was one of the prettiest places we visited in China.....

Big Thanks to the Bad Monkey - you made us feel right at home and have the best english breakfast in China!

BAD MONKEY ALBUM

Our night at the Uprock in Kunming was probably one of my favourite nights of the whole tour and quite simply because the people were just so up for it - top crowd - respect to the Kunming krew - you rock.......

Everything we played em they loved - finished the night with a bit of breakdance chinese snake styleee to some funky breakz...

Pool table so big i couldn't even see the other side - good fun was had by all.....

UPROCK ALBUM

Our last night was in the Hemp house in Cheng Du - a smokerz venue with dancefloor - balcony and smokin garden....

Not a massive crowd here either and unfortunately no photos but wicked place/people and thanks for the excellent hospitality...

During the 3 weeks that we were in China an early night was
2 a.m and a late one between 6 and 10 (thus completely avoiding jetlag) We were definitely checking out the nightlife - but we did manage to get a bit of touristing in and a lot of eating.....

And i do recommend to anyone thinking of visiting the great wall of China not to stay out til 6.00a.m drinking the night before , some of the sections are very steep!!!

So heres the holiday shots......

And last but not least - a phones eye view - heres some of the classic photos only a phone can catch.....

The Phone Photos.... .

Thanks to to Tan for the amazing organisation involved in making this tour happen and Eva for nonstop on location translation .

Thanks to everyone who looked after us - put us up - fed us - supplied us with free beer and everyone who was on the dancefloor.....

And i forgot to say - one of the real dangers of going out partying in China is, if you were to accidently become separated from your crew, together with the fact that not only can you not understand any one - but you also can't read any of the signposts ,with the size of some of these chinese super cities - there is a real risk of becoming lost forever!!
Always make sure you take your adress in chinese writing to show to the taxi man - or you could be wandering those streets forever....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my first priorities when attempting to pick up a bit of Chinese was obviously to find out the word for vinyl - imagine my horror when i was informed that there wasn't one and that i would have to say "big black C.D!" How wrong is that!
There are not many vinyl D.j'S in China, it's mostly c.d,s or mp3,s although there is a small scratch crew doing the do. At most of the venues we played at the decks and mixer were especially hired in for us - but Tan the tour organiser optimistically informed me that the vinyl scene in China is only just beginning and that there was a pressing plant just down the road in Russia!!!

Including the flights to and from France - how many kilometres do you think we covered during the 3 weeks we toured China?
